The Association of Tanzania Employers (ATE) in collaboration with Occupational Safety and Health Authority (OSHA) on 28th April 2017 joined the world to commemorate World day for Health and Safety at work. The event took place in Kilimanjaro region at ‘Ushirika’ grounds under the theme: “Optimize the collection and use of OSH data.”
This occasion was graced by Hon. Jenista Mhagama (MP) Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office-Policy, Parliament, Labour, Youth, Employment and People with Disabilities who also awarded companies with best practices on OSH.
The companies which won the awards include Geita Gold Mine who won awards on several categories including the overall winner, first winner in the mining sector and the best exhibitor. For Manufacturing sector, the winner were Tanga Cement, TPC and Tanzania Tobacco Processors limited. Other companies that won the awards include Tanesco, Vodacom, Buzwagi and North Mara mines as well as Northern Engineering for service, telecommunication, mining and construction sector respectively.
In marking the day, ATE urged the Government to allocate enough resources to OSHA to reduce the costs among Employers when accessing OSH services. Moreover, Employers were reminded to have a culture of notifying the authority in case of incidents or occupational diseases as required by the Law.
